Soaking in the Banff Upper Hot Springs

Soaking in the soothing, mineral-rich waters of the Banff Upper Hot Springs offers a wonderfully relaxing, historic experience that has been a travel ritual for over a century. Situated high on the slopes of Sulphur Mountain at 1,585 meters (5,196 feet), these are the highest elevated hot springs in Canada. The outdoor pool is filled with 100% natural, geothermally heated water that flows from a mountain fracture, consistently hovering at a relaxing 37°C to 40°C (98°F to 104°F) and offering sweeping views of Mount Rundle across the valley.

What makes a visit here highly rewarding is the deep historical connection to the national park's origins. First discovered by railway workers in 1883, the thermal waters led directly to the creation of Banff National Park as Canada's very first protected reserve. Soaking in the warm pool while surrounded by crisp mountain air, falling winter snow, or summer sunsets is incredibly therapeutic. The facility features historic bathhouse architecture, offering a relaxing, slow-paced escape that is the perfect way to soothe tired muscles after a long day of hiking or skiing.

One fun fact people love:

The water in the hot springs is heated geothermally, plunging over two kilometers deep into the earth's crust to heat up before rising naturally back to the surface.

Things nobody tells you about this place:

  • During the spring run-off (typically late April to May), the natural flow of the springs can fluctuate, requiring the pool to be temporarily supplemented with clean, heated water.
  • The smell of the water carries a mild sulfur scent (resembling hard-boiled eggs), which is a natural result of the rich minerals dissolved deep underground.
  • The facility operates on a first-come, first-served basis; during holiday weekends, wait times to enter the bathhouse can reach up to an hour.
