Climbing to the windy peak of Mount Tullu Dimtu offers an exhilarating sense of achievement in the highest reaches of the national park. Rising to 4,377 meters above sea level, this impressive volcanic dome is the second-highest peak in Ethiopia. The trail climbs steadily from the Sanetti Plateau, passing through a rocky, barren landscape dotted with hardy alpine grasses and small glacial lakes that mirror the deep blue mountain sky.

Standing at the summit, surrounded by the vastness of the Ethiopian highlands, you can enjoy endless, unobstructed views stretching across the entire plateau and down into the deep valleys below.

One fun fact people love:

The name Tullu Dimtu translates to "Red Mountain" in the local Oromo language, named after the rich, iron-red volcanic soil and rock that covers the peak.

Where in Bale Mountains is it?

Located in the southern section of the Sanetti Plateau, situated deep within the national park boundaries.

How to reach:

Easily reached by taking a vehicle along the high-altitude Sanetti road to the base of the peak, followed by a short, active walk to the summit.

Best time to visit:

December to March when the mountain skies are at their clearest, offering the most spectacular, long-distance panoramic views.

Best time of day:

Early morning around 8:30 AM when the air is crisp and clear, before the midday clouds rise from the southern valleys.

Entry fee:

Included in your standard national park entry ticket, which costs approximately ETB 100 per person per day.

Commute difficulty:

Moderate to challenging; the walk is short but the high altitude makes breathing highly difficult, requiring slow and steady paces.

Things nobody tells you about this place:

  • The wind at the summit is incredibly powerful and freezing cold, so you will need windproof gloves, a thick beanie, and a heavy thermal jacket.
  • High-altitude sickness can affect hikers here, so if you experience a sudden headache or dizziness, descend to lower levels immediately.
  • You can often spot rare, high-altitude birds like the majestic bearded vulture soaring effortlessly on the strong wind currents near the peak.
