Ascension Cathedral, also known as Zenkov Cathedral, is one of the most remarkable wooden structures in the world and among the top attractions in Almaty. Rising 56 metres high, this Russian Orthodox cathedral was built between 1904 and 1907 entirely from Tien Shan spruce without the use of nails. Designed by architect Andrei Zenkov to withstand earthquakes, it famously survived the devastating 1911 Kebin earthquake with minimal damage while many masonry buildings collapsed. Its pastel pink, blue and yellow exterior crowned with five golden onion domes makes it a highlight of Almaty tourism. Inside, restored frescoes and a richly carved iconostasis reflect its early 20th century origins. The cathedral stands in Panfilov Park, a historic green space often featured in every Almaty travel guide and one of the most peaceful places to visit in Almaty.
What makes this place special

The painted vaulted ceiling and intricate wooden iconostasis with original 1907 panels have been carefully restored after the building’s Soviet era closure, when it functioned as a museum from 1929 to 1995. Weekday mornings are especially quiet for those who visit Almaty and wish to explore in calm surroundings.

In the eastern section of the park lies the dramatic Soviet era WWII memorial dedicated to the 28 Panfilov Heroes, complete with monumental stone sculptures and an eternal flame. It remains one of the most significant historical things to do in Almaty before returning to nearby Almaty hotels in the city centre.
